Mutual Funds: A Simple Start
Understand mutual funds, SIPs and the questions to ask before investing.

A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it in assets such as shares or bonds according to a stated investment objective. A professional fund manager manages the portfolio, while investors hold units in the scheme.
Choosing the right type
Equity funds invest mainly in shares, debt funds primarily in fixed-income securities, and hybrid funds combine asset classes. Each carries different risks. Match a scheme to your goal, time horizon and ability to tolerate losses—not just its recent performance.
SIP or lump sum?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) lets you invest a fixed amount at regular intervals. A lump-sum investment puts an amount to work at once. A SIP encourages consistency, but it does not guarantee a profit or protect you from market losses.
Before you invest
Read the scheme documents, check its Riskometer, expense ratio and applicable exit load, and understand the tax implications. Keep emergency savings separate and review whether the investment remains suited to your goals.
